Women in Business: Unless You Ask, the Answer Is Always No

The Reality of Women in Business Today

Women make up close to half of the workforce. We’re in the rooms, we’re doing the work, and we’re just as dedicated to our professional growth as our male counterparts. But being the hardest worker in the room often results in more work, not necessarily a better career.

If you’re waiting for your team to help you move forward in your career just because you’re reliable, you’re playing a game that was never designed for your advancement. In the current landscape for women in business, you have to stop being the best-kept secret in your organization and start being the person who claims what’s already within reach.

I’ve served as the Vice Chair of the Women’s Franchise Committee (WFC) at the International Franchise Association (IFA) for two years now, and the biggest lesson I’ve learned is that the resources for your growth already exist. But they just aren’t going to find you on their own. The support is there, the mentorship is ready, and the funding is accessible. But none of it matters if you aren’t the one to reach out and claim it. Whether you’re looking for a promotion or considering a leap into entrepreneurship, the path is already crafted. What’s missing is your decision to actually walk it.

Nothing Changes Unless You Do

There is a line from “The Lorax” (yes, the book by famed author Dr. Seuss): “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” In a professional context, that message is even more blunt.

No one is going to do the work for you. Unless you go after what you want, your situation stays exactly as it is. Unless you advocate for yourself, no one is going to do it for you. It’s easy to think that if we put our heads down and do the work, someone will eventually notice and reward us. But that’s a common trap.

There’s no silent reward for waiting your turn. If you don’t care enough about your own trajectory to speak up, you can’t expect anyone else to take that risk for you. Think about the “unless” as your personal call to action. In the same way the Lorax warned that the forest wouldn’t return without a committed advocate, the landscape for women in business won’t improve without individual intervention.

If you’re not willing to be the person who asks for the raise, the raise doesn’t happen. If you’re not willing to explore business ownership or new opportunities because your current job is a dead end, you stay stuck. And if you aren’t advocating for your own growth, you’re essentially agreeing to stay small.

Your Toolkit for Franchise Ownership

If the traditional corporate structure isn’t providing the growth you want, it’s worth looking at different avenues. This is a primary focus for the WFC. We provide the specific resources that help women move into franchise ownership and thrive within it. Franchising is a logical entry point for many entrepreneurs because you aren’t building a brand from the ground up or guessing at operational standards. You’re stepping into proven systems and established brand power, a way for women in business to become true leaders without the unnecessary risk of starting from zero.

The WFC supports this through several channels:

  • The “Her Success” Podcast: This is where we get into the weeds. We interview women who’ve already made the jump into franchising. They share their honest experiences, their failures, and the tactics they used to scale so you can learn directly from those who’ve already cleared the path.
  • Annual Leadership Conference: This is the high-energy kickoff for the annual IFA convention. Featuring keynote speakers, panels, and networking opportunities, attendants share great practices, useful insights, and new ways to strengthen business development strategies.
  • The Women’s Franchise Network (WFN): These local chapters provide a space for women in business to meet up in their own communities. It’s a dedicated environment to share thoughts and discuss the latest developments in the franchising world with peers who understand the landscape.

While identifying the right resources is a massive victory, they only work if you have the capital to activate them. If high-level tools and networks are the roadmap, funding is the engine.

Benetrends provides the options to turn that professional ambition into actual franchise ownership. Whether you’re utilizing 401(k) rollovers (ROBS) or securing SBA loans, these paths help you fund the move into your first, second, or third franchise location. Many talented people have the drive but lack the initial capital. The right funding is ready whenever you are.

Take the Lead

The gap between where you are and where you want to be isn’t going to close on its own. It requires a deliberate choice to stop being a passenger in your professional life. Whether you’re aiming for a new role or a complete pivot, the resources to make that move are already available. The only variable is your own initiative to claim the mentors, the networks, and the funding that turn your goals into a reality.

Advocating for your own growth is a commitment to not staying small. You can’t expect the landscape for women in business to improve unless you’re willing to be the one who asks for the raise, the seat, or the capital. The tools are here and the support is ready. It’s just a matter of deciding that your career is a seed worth planting and taking the responsibility to make it grow.
